The Australian and world number one Ashleigh Barty is out of the AO 2021 in Melbourne. She has been defeated by Karolina Muchova from the Czech Republic in the quarter-finals with 6:1, 3:6, 2:6.
After the match, the exhausted Karolina Muchova packed an ice pack on her head after her coup in the heat of the Australian sun. Ashleigh Barty just stomped out of Rod Laver Arena in frustration. However, she later found back to her coolness and said, “The sun will rise again tomorrow. It just wasn’t my day“.
The Czech was in disbelieve that she won over the world’s number one Barty, regardless of her struggle with the heat. Following the game, Muchova said, “I was dizzy, I almost fainted. Everything was spinning in my head.” During a medical timeout early in the second set, she had a doctor cool her down with ice. She returned to the court with new energy and advanced to a Grand Slam semifinal for the first time.
Muchova, the world’s number 27, will meet Jennifer Brady from the US on the court and fight for her spot in the finals. Brady defeated compatriot Jessica Pegula in the quarter-finals with 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.
This time there will be spectators in the arena again. 50% of the arena’s capacity can be filled after the harsh 5-day-lockdown in Melbourne came to an end on Wednesday midnight.
