After a 0-2 defeat at AC Milan, the Giallorossi urgently need to score points in the next games to hold a chance for an entry ticket in the top league.
With two victories in different ways, AC Milan (clear 4-1 in Lecce) and AS Roma (2-1 after falling behind 0-1 against Sampdoria Genoa) had returned to the Serie A. Now both teams met – with the better end for the Rossoneri.
AS Roma had made a very promising start in the first half, with Zappacosta and Mkhitaryan bringing on a lot of pressure over the right wing, but without success. After the break and change of sides, not much was happening at first as both teams didn’t take any risks. But then Milan took command for the first time that afternoon – and twice despaired of Roma keeper Mirante in the process. First, Calhanoglu failed from an acute angle (65th), then Lucas Paqueta could not believe his eyes when his treacherously deflected long-range shot was scratched to the side (67th).
But in the 76th minute the spell was broken: After a lively target shoot-out on the Roman’s goal, Rebic finally fired the ball into the box on the second attempt. After Smalling’s clumsy tackle against Theo Hernandez, Calhanoglu converted to the 2-0 final score via penalty.
AC Milan can thus continue to hope to play in international soccer next season. For AS Roma, on the other hand, the royal class is moving further away.
Both teams have high chances of winning their next matches on Wednesday and Thursday: For AC Milan at Ferrara, we suggest a 3-0 victory for the Milanese. AS Roma will play at home against Udinese Calcio where we predict a 2-0 win for the Romans.
