Novak Djokovic, who is chasing his 18th Grand Slam title, made it to the second round of the US Open. With 6-1, 6-4, 6-1 and in 1:58 hours, the Serb defeated Damir Dzumhur from Bosnia-Herzegovina. Djokovic, the world number one, is the big favourite at the US Open.
Another player who reached the second round is Alexander Zverev. The German beat Kevin Anderson from South Africa in four sets, 7-6 (7-2), 5-7, 6-3, 7-5. Anderson is a former US Open and Wimbledon finalist.
The German tennis player, Angelique Kerber, also had a successful start at the US Open. After a seven-month break from competition, Kerber defeated Ajla Tomljanovic from Australia with 6-4, 6-4.
Jan-Lennard Struff from Germany defeated the Spanish Pedro Martinez with 6-0, 7-5, 6-4.
The German player, Dominik Koepfer, failed in the first round. He lost against the US-American Taylor Fritz with 7:6 (9:7), 3:6, 2:6, 4:6. Same as Dominik, Peter Gojowczyk did not make it to the second round as he lost against Hubert Hurkacz from Poland with 3:6, 4:6, 4:6.
Cameron Norrie from Great Britain defeated Diego Schwartzman from Argentina.
Cori Gauff, the 16-year-old US-American tennis shooting star, lost her first-round match at a Grand Slam tournament. Cori was defeated by Anastasija Sevastova from Latvia with 3:6, 7:5, 4:6.
Stefanos Tsitsipa reached the second round after winning over Albert Ramos from Spain with 6:2, 6:1, 6:1.
