FC Barcelona fans can breathe a sigh of relief: According to media reports, Lionel Messi will stay with the Spanish champions for at least another season.
The 32-year old Argentinian could have left FC Barcelona this summer at his request. But since Monday it has been clear that the Barça superstar will remain in Catalonia – at least until 2021.
Messi has been a player of FC Barcelona since 2004 – with youth years at La Masia since 2000 making him Barça’s longest-serving player. His current contract runs until 30 June next year. According to the media, the redemption clause stipulated in the contract amounts to 700 million euros.
Although the Catalans have won the La Liga title seven times in the past ten years, their last Champions League triumph was almost five years ago.
Messi & co will be back in just two weeks when Spanish football will be back in the form of ghost games after a three-month break. At the start, championship leader Barça will make a guest appearance at RCD Mallorca.
