FC Barcelona suffered a devastating defeat on Friday night in the Champions League quarter-finals, when the German record champion Bayern Munich overwhelmed especially defensively catastrophic Catalans with no less than 8-2!
It was like a tsunami hit the last remaining Spanish football club in the king’s class when FC Bayern exposed that the golden days of the team around coach Quique Setien are long gone.
After the game, FC Barcelona’s head of defence Gerard Piqué (33) questioned virtually everything. Piqué, who has been with the club for twelve years, spoke clearly: “This club needs change. I’m not just talking about the coach and the players”. A clear message to president Josep Maria Bartomeu, with whom the team has clashed in the past. “I am the first to offer his departure if it would help the club”, Piqué also said, visibly touched. After this humiliation, there is an urgent need for “fresh blood” and “structural changes”. Barça is currently “not competitive internationally”. Moreover, even in La Liga, the performances were lately far from good.
Whatever happens to the Catalans, one thing is clear, at least today: this 8-2 end result from Lisbon will go down in football history. FC Bayern breaks FC Barcelona down into its component parts and underpins its title ambitions. No matter which opponent will now face the Munich team in the semi-finals, the Bavarians are the favourite team after these 90 minutes.
Not convinced that FC Bayern will also win the semi-final against Lyon who won 3 – 1 the last match against Manchester City.
