Bayer Leverkusen remains top of the Bundesliga after matchday 12 with its victory in Cologne. Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig remain close on their heels.
Lightning start leads Leverkusen to victory in Rhine derby
Bayer Leverkusen remains top of the Bundesliga after a 4-0 win in Cologne. The Rhine derby was almost done and dusted after just ten minutes. Weiser’s volley was the first to ring the bell before Diaby followed immediately after to make it 2-0. As a result, the Werkself had the game under control until the break. Within a few minutes, Schick and Wirtz increased the lead to 4-0, and the game was finally decided.
Lewandowski heads his way to another milestone
Thanks to Robert Lewandowski, FC Bayern is still close behind Leverkusen after a 2-1 win over Wolfsburg. It started as it does so often lately: FCB was trailing a 0-1. Sané made the crucial mistake, and Philipp accepted the invitation to score for Wolfsburg. VfL continued to do well, while Bayern failed to take advantage of their chances – until shortly before the break. Lewandowski headed in Coman’s assist to make it 1-1. For the Pole, it was his 250th Bundesliga goal. Immediately after the change, Lewandowski also scored the 2-1 – already his 15th goal of the season. But Wolfsburg kept its head up, and Neuer had to pull off a top-class save to hold on to the victory in the final phase.
Leipzig defeats Hoffenheim thanks to Poulsen
Hoffenheim and Leipzig made it really difficult for each other to advance into the final third in Sinsheim. Only Adams had a massive chance at first but headed just over from close range. In the second half, Poulsen scored the winning goal for the Saxons, while Vogt had to be treated outside. It remained the only goal of the game. As a result, RB remains level on points with FC Bayern.
Dreariness at Schalke: Freiburg takes the points away
A harmless Schalke team remained without a win against Freiburg also in the 28th attempt. The motto of the first half on both sides: Just don’t do anything wrong. Accordingly, the game rippled along for long stretches. A handball by Sané in the penalty area caused some discussion, but the VAR did not consider it a punishable offence. A lucky call for the home side. After the change, that was the end of it. A double strike by Sallai sealed the defeat for the harmless Schalke team. There was no noteworthy reaction after the 0-2 so that Sport-Club Freiburg deservedly returned to the Breisgau with three points.
Gouweleeuw sets the tone for Augsburg
After five games without a win, Augsburg celebrated a victory in Bielefeld. However, despite a promising start, Augsburg went into the dressing room at the Bielefeld Alm without a goal, as both sides lacked the necessary power in the danger zone. In the closing stages of the game, it was FCA captain Gouweleeuw who scored the all-important 1:0 for the visitors and increased the Arminen’s worries.
