The BVB’s goals for the season are in great danger, and so Borussia Dortmund is parting ways with coach Lucien Favre after 29 months of cooperation. BVB itself announced this via official press release on Sunday afternoon.
After only one victory from the past five compulsory games and a fierce 1:5 victory against VfB Stuttgart on Saturday, Lucien Favre is out of the BVB. The Swiss coach was dismissed on Sunday as expected – as was his assistant coach Manfred Stefes. After “Bild” had already reported on this, the official BVB confirmation followed on Sunday at 3 pm.
“Until the end of the season, the previous co-trainer Edin Terzic (38) will be the head coach,” the Westphalians also announced. Terzic, whose coaching career began in the BVB junior team, has already worked in the professional sector in Istanbul for Besiktas and West Ham United, “before returning to Strobelallee in 2018 as the assistant to Favre. The previous U-17 team coach Sebastian Geppert (36) and top talent coach Otto Addo (45) will support Terzic from now on. The new man will introduce himself in his first press conference on Monday at 1:15 pm.
Favre, who came from OGC Nice in July 2018, continues to have the best points record as BVB coach in the Bundesliga (2.09) together with Thomas Tuchel but has not managed to win a title despite promising opportunities. After the first half of the 2018/19 season, for example, BVB already had a six-point lead over FC Bayern (nine in the meantime), but in the end, Munich still won the title.
Favre and BVB had suffered repeated setbacks over the last few months, but the 63-year-old always found an answer. After black and yellow had their backs to the wall at the same time the previous season after a 3-3 draw with Paderborn, Favre successfully switched to a 3-4-3 system in the next game in Berlin.
Now that even the Champions League qualification is in danger, BVB has pulled the ripcord.
Dortmund’s sports director Michael Zorc also had a few words to say: “It is difficult for us to take this step. Nevertheless, we believe that the achievement of our season’s goals is in serious jeopardy due to the recent negative developments in the current constellation and that we must therefore act”.
