It was a long match, not filled with much excitement. Portugal played against Belgium in the hot Sevilla. The Olympic Stadium was mainly filled with Portuguese fans who hoped for Portugal’s win and were disappointed after the Red Devils scored their 1:0. Thorgan Hazard scored in the 42nd minute for the Belgians. With this win, Belgium is again in the quarter-finals same as back in 2016.
The match did not offer many great moments. It was visible that both teams wanted to play it safe as the respect for the other team was too big. Belgium was the more energetic team. However, the offence around Romelu Lukaku, Eden Hazard and Thorgan Hazard was strong and did not allow the Belgium team to build a strong game.
In the Portuguese team, it was mainly Renato Sanches pulling strings in midfield. It was also him who created a real chance for a goal in the first part of the game by sending Diogo Jota on his way. However, Jota missed the goal. In the 25th minute, Cristiano Ronaldo tried to build up some pressure with a sharp free-kick from 19 meters.
It took 37 minutes for Belgium to come up with the first shot on goal by Meunier, which went over the crossbar. Five minutes later, Thorgan Hazard fired the ball into the far goal’s corner from around 20 meters.
After the break, the Red Devils lost the game’s flow as Kevin De Bruyne had to leave the field with an injury. Portugal started to take more risks, and the match becomes more energetic and exciting. Ronaldo set the scene for Diogo Jota in the 58th minute. However, Jota missed the target again. A little later, Joao Felix took the chance to equalize as well as Raphael Guerreiro in the 83rd minute.
Belgium, the number one in the FIFA world rankings, will face Italy in Munich on Friday, in the round of the last eight teams.
